The Draw of Survivor Camps

Survivor Camp

It’s not easy reaching today’s youths. Various kinds of entertainment vie for their attention. These include cybercafes, the Internet and video games. As a result, most are cold towards spiritual matters. To get them interested, we need to organize challenging and fun activities that test their abilities.

From June 1 to 3, during the school holidays, the High School Ministry with the help of the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia organized a motivation camp called "Survivor 3" at the Bunsit Bandukan Keningau Recreational Park. This is the third camp organized jointly with the church.

The objectives of holding the camp were to build a bridge to present the Gospel to the participants, to give spiritual guidance, motivate youths to focus on their studies, build up their confidence and help them improve their social skills.

Ninety-four teenagers from Keningau, Nabawan and Pensiangan attended the three-day camp. The guest speaker was Suliman, director of the National BM Ministry, and the members of the forum panel were Pastor Janius, director of Youth Ministry, BCCM BM Sabah, and Angeline from SIB Tuntumulud, Keningau. They spoke on topics ranging from spiritual growth to teen life and education/career.

The programs for the camp included a motivation talk, a talent nite and a forum. In addition, various games that tested the participants’ survival skills were organized. These were intended to build character, test creativity and mental alertness, and encourage discipline and team work.

The response from the young people was very encouraging. Among the comments: "I found this camp very meaningful. It’s my first time away from home." "This camp is different from those I’ve attended before. Through the motivation talk, I’ve learnt how to become not only a teen that is liked by Christ but by others as well. I’ve also made new friends. I will come for similar camps."

More than 99 per cent of the participants want camps of this sort to be held, with even more challenging activities. We hope to organize more such camps in future. In view of the lack of manpower, we will recruit pastors, church leaders and others to act as facilitators.
